Owerri Digital Village Graduates Young Scientists
Franca had minimal exposure to computers at a local business where she worked prior to enrolling in the Young Scientist Tele-Academy at the Owerri Digital Village. She had used only Microsoft Word to type letters and memos. "I always wanted to learn more about using computers for research," she said. The Young Scientists Tele-Academy helped her to do just that. "I got my very first exposure to the Internet and learned how to conduct effective online research using search engines like Google. I am surprised at how much information I can find in such a short time; information that would not exist in our local libraries". On October 7th 2004, Franca celebrated with other youth who completed the 12-week program. At the conclusion of the program, YTF was able to report measurable outcomes as: 1. Program
participants were able to work with YTF and other grassroots organizations
to influence policy and mobilize public and private educational institutions
to take a more proactive stance on HIV/AIDS. 3. Program participants demonstrated at least a 75% increase in their technology skills as measured by a technical proficiency test administered at the onset and conclusion of the program. 4. Program participants demonstrated an in-dept understanding of using open and distance learning technologies for increased communication, collaboration, creative reasoning and multicultural understanding. Congratulations to future young scientists. YTF is proud to have served you at the Owerri Digital Village. |
