The emergence of new technologies is changing society, the way we live, the way we communicate and do business—and the way we learn. Even in developing countries, where technology is still not considered a core part of the curriculum, educators are finding it necessary that they give young people the foundation necessary to compete with their global peers in the 21^st century, there is pressure to change in order to adequately prepare students to live, learn, and work in a global, digital age. As a result of this pressure, technology and computers are being introduced to enhance teaching and learning and prepare students for the new world in which they live.

At YTF, we help students improve academically through programs that directly relate what they learn in school to real-world experiences.

YTF’s core programs are offered through YTF Academy, are after-school and are co-developed with the local communities we work in. In partnership with schools, community based organizations, women led organizations, grassroots non-profits, small businesses and faith-based organizations, YTF provides young people with the skills to lead in their communities.

Computer Refurbishment & Distribution Program

YTF receives donations of technology equipment including laptops and desktop computers from individuals and corporations. We refurbish this equipment for use by beneficiaries in our network of Community Technology and Learning Centers. YTF also refurbishes the technology for donation to other U.S. based organizations working in low-income communities.

Upon receiving a new donation, the YTF technical team first wipes the hard drive with Dban. The process, which can take several hours, deletes all data from the hard drive 7 times, making it impossible to recover anything. Even if the hard drive is replaced it is first wiped. If the hard drive is damaged and cannot be wiped holes are drilled through the disk to prevent any possibility of data recovery.

Once the hard drive has been wiped or replaced all systems are thoroughly cleaned, both inside and out and any non-working parts that affect the operation are replaced. If the computer has a current operating system license sticker, that OS is installed. If not, an operating system of their choice is installed along with a virus protection. All computers are tested to ensure they run without locking up, can access the Internet and that all installed applications launch and run smoothly.
