In the U.S. more than 5 million people between the ages of 16 and 24 don’t go to school and don’t work and 78% of middle skill jobs require digital skills. Over the next decade, 77% of jobs will require technology skills, but youth in underserved communities and lower income families often lack access to the technology tools and training they need to compete.

YTF expanded its programming into the U.S. market in 2016. In the U.S., we are in a unique position to help the youth in these communities, digital natives, be prepared for the jobs for the future. With our offices located in the PNC Gigabit Experience Center part of the Old Walnut Street development of Louisville Central Community Centers, YTF is strategically located to work alongside Louisville Metro Council to meet the needs of its Digital Inclusion Strategy; improving connectivity, providing digital skills and hardware.

YTF’s after-school and summer programming inspires young learners to pursue STEM disciplines by creating fun, hands-on learning activities. YTF knows that an interest in science, rather than proficiency, is more strongly predictive of whether or not a young person pursues a STEM career. Our programs provide programming instruction, app development, 3D design and printing, robotics and more.

STEM success requires not only access for underserved students but also support for these students in non-traditional curriculum. Students need not just a course of study, but also meaningful encounters with the world of work that demonstrates the STEM-related career possibilities.

Despite daunting statistics and limited resources, it is possible to reengage and reenergize students, especially girls’ interest in STEM subjects through learning environments which are academically supportive and psychosocially encouraging, and which offer them:

    1. experiential/hands-on learning
    2. learning activities related to working in STEM fields
    3. mentoring by STEM professionals
    4. problem-based/solution-oriented learning

We are transforming teens into a new generation of engineers, entrepreneurs, creatives and leaders in their communities.
