“I now understand how the Internet can be used most effectively to learn and how 3D printing is empowering young people, like me, to design and create the world we want to live in.”

– Elizabeth, 12 year-old participant

This year’s International Girls in ICT Day events included 3D printing technologies, presentations by female experts on innovation, women in STEM careers, and discussions on engaging girls in STEM, especially in African cultural contexts.

The highlight was an inspiring keynote speech by Captain Chinyere Kalu, Nigeria’s first female pilot. She shared her journey along the way, particularly the obstacles she faced and overcame as a female in a male-dominated field. She noted the important role of the government and educators in encouraging girls to pursue STEM careers, and shared that she is now dedicating her life to advocating for gender equality in STEM fields.

International Girls in ICT Day is a strong source of inspiration, information, and encouragement. Girls who would otherwise have no awareness of STEM careers are now able to realize their interests, be empowered for their full potential, understand how they can change the world, stay in school, and help to lead the way for, and with, other girls.
