YTF Student to Business Owner: Chimankpam’s Story

We know that when youth are given the right tools, they can become job creators who spur growth and progress in their communities. The story of Chimankpam Okechukwu, a former YTF Academy and entrepreneur, shows how this works in practice. Here’s his story.

My name is Chimankpam O. and I’m a Nigerian entrepreneur. I run two businesses — Somas Digital Technology, a digital photography studio, and a computer training center.

Attending YTF Academy was a turning point in my life — it not only helped me find my career path in technology, but also provided resources upon which I built a successful career.

In fact, it never occurred to me that I’d want to go into entrepreneurship before my experience with YTF. YTF instructors encouraged the students to look inside themselves to find purpose. I’ve always had the desire to serve people and provide solutions to their needs, and the realization prompted me to launch my own businesses to do just that.

Winning a digital camera as a reward at a YTF competition laid the groundwork for my photography career. I’ve always had passion for photography and I started my career taking pictures for school events with the camera. Now as I run a full-fledged photography business, I still use the same camera.

The education I received at YTF inspired me to give back to the community, and that’s how I came to run a computer training center. We currently have three computers that I purchased with my savings, and while small in size, I believe the center is playing an important role in educating local youth in ICT skills.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without YTF, and I’m very thankful.
