Go Green with YTF & 2trg

Youth For Technology Foundation (YTF) & 2trg to host e-Cycling Day on March 11, 2010

Louisville, KY , February 8, 2010 – Youth For Technology Foundation (YTF), an international non-profit organization with a mission to provide disadvantaged youth with appropriate technology for learning, and 2trg, recycler of electronics located in Louisville, KY, are hosting an e-Cycling Day on March 11, 2010 at the Green Building in Louisville, KY. There will be no charge for dropping off equipment for recycling, with the exception of TV’s where a nominal fee will be charged.

This event will provide consumers the opportunity to dispose of their used or obsolete computers, cell phones, printers, mice, keyboards and other electronic devices in an environmentally safe and convenient manner. 2trg will refurbish computers that are dropped off and these will be donated to YTF. In addition, a percentage of the proceeds from commodities of outdated technology collected from the event will also go to YTF.

Electronic waste is quickly becoming a big problem for businesses and consumers. The rapid growth in technology has led to an improvement in capacity of computers and a decrease in the product’s lifetime, such that the volume of e-waste generated is increasing. Devices are becoming obsolete quicker and need to be disposed of, posing a threat to the environment and to the security of the previous owner’s data. Sometimes, these devices are shipped in unusable conditions as ‘donation’ to developing nations where the infrastructure to refurbish or appropriately dispose of them is lacking – leading to what is known as the ‘Digital Dump.’

Njideka Harry, YTF’s Founder, stated, “We are pleased to partner with 2trg on such an important issue in our communities. People are buying new electronics at an astonishing rate and disposing of the old ones in an inappropriate way. In many instances, this obsolete equipment ends up in developing countries, which is not right. This is what YTF is advocating against through this event.”
